Opinion Poll: Does Making VoIP Calls Instead of Airtime Calls Mean One is Broke?
This opinion poll shows different views about VoIP Calls vs Airtime Calls and how it relates to being broke or not. The 21st Century internet has had several effect on our culture and has brought about some weird stereotypes especially to youths of this generation. Today, I’d be shedding light on a particular misconception that has lingered for a while now.
Quite a number of people think making Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls instead of Airtime calls means one might be broke. In my own opinion, I don’t agree with such thoughts because I believe everyone’s reason for doing some things differ. WhatsApp Calls would be used as a case study for VoIP calls in this opinion poll.
I believe by the end of this short blurb, the topic at hand would enlighten us and help us reconsider our opinions towards it.
The following responses were giving by participants within my circle of friends:
Participant Opinion About VoIP(WhatsApp) and Airtime Calls
Participant 1:
Why broke? No be money you use buy data? NO be money you still use buy airtime? Whatever works for you fam.
Participant 2:
WhatsApp call is not as cheap as people make it seem. You’re paying for it too now. If it’s video call it’s even more expensive.
WhatsApp call is a no. We must have gotten to the level of good friends before you can be calling me on WhatsApp because we’re both paying for the call.
Participant 3:
WhatsApp when there is network. If you think I’m broke, Thank you. You can call me back on normal airtime when I call you with WhatsApp, don’t complain just cut it.
Participant 4:
WhatsApp is okay but it’s when the person always calls with WhatsApp and it’s a local number then it’s annoying. If the person sometimes does normal calls, it’s acceptable.
Participant 5:
LOL…broke is broke.
I don’t think it’s bad but I prefer video calls though buffer time makes it suck. Truth be told, I really don’t care. Just call me and talk long so I can make you laugh.
Participant 6:
It doesn’t make you appear broke, but I believe there must be a level of closeness kind of before I can call someone via WhatsApp call. Or the discussion is such a long one and I must have informed the other party that I’m calling via WhatsApp.
In addition, for long discussions, I prefer WhatsApp call… I mean, you are being charged on your data too now.
Participant 8:
Not at all but I prefer airtime call then WhatsApp call.
Participant 9:
Airtime. If the discussion is so long and u have sufficient airtime, there is no need to resort to voice call. You are being charged on your data not as much as you would be charged if you used airtime.
I honestly prefer voice call no matter how lengthy the discussion. The only reason I could prefer WhatsApp call is, if the person I am speaking with is not in Nigeria.
Participant 10:
My opinion about WhatsApp or Airtime calls, either works for me. Although, there are times network can really be a big ish with WhatsApp… I’ll say though, that, there’s room for lengthier calls with WhatsApp but this could also work with airtime, just that one would spend more…in a way.
Participant 11:
Anyone available ni o. In as much the network is favourable.
Participant 12:
Airtime lol. Whenever I call and it’s getting long. I’ll start wishing it was WhatsApp I used. That credit dey chuk body 😀
Participant 13:
So first and foremost, WhatsApp calls aren’t meant for formal conversations, so it’s wrong on all notes.
Secondly, if you’re calling someone using WhatsApp, it takes the other person’s data as well, so in a way, that’s selfish considering you’re the one wanting to pass an information, also, this Naija wey we dey, network ain’t so good, so there’s call lags a lot.
Finally, WhatsApp calls are meant for close friends who understand that someone is probably not having much and they want to talk at length, so they’d rather use that. You can’t be calling people on WhatsApp calls all the time, it spells selfishness, not even willing to loaf and call normal… Lastly, I hate WhatsApp calls.
Participant 14:
Well well…I personally call via WhatsApp when I don’t have airtime and when I’ve exhausted my airtime, but still have a whole lot to say.
I honestly don’t like talking at length using WhatsApp call…it is frustrating most times…network ish.
Participant 15:
What kinda archaic individual would still say to use airtime, when you have invested in subscription and God bless you, your both have super supportive network….
But then some people are Bush like that…. Airtime Ko….. Postal service ni.
Participant 16:
Airtime call bro.
Participant 17:
Actually, I don’t see WhatsApp call as call because you don’t get to enjoy the call like when it’s airtime. It doesn’t mean you are broke. I just prefer the call via airtime coz you get to flow wella. I don’t mind how much it may cost me… Me just dey call dey go.
Conclusion
The direction the world is tilting to now, VoIP calls can also be an alternative to Airtime calls and might be the way we all might emulate for communication in years to come.
Based on subjectivity, no one can be said to be right or wrong about the topic above. Each person is entitled to his/her opinion.
It’s important to understand the kind relationship you have with people before you call via VoIP not everyone is comfortable with it. At the end of the day, it’s different strokes for different folks. Just stick to whatever works best for you.
