How To Raise All-Round Awesome Kids
Parenting is a herculean task; having to juggle between being a career woman and being that loving mother to our adorables is no small feat!
It has no ‘follow – come’ manual as only you know how to raìse your child.
All parents have one thing in common; they all want to raise responsible, compassionate and successful children.
If you’re a parent to a little human, it might interest you to know what scientific research is out there on strategies that can help you achieve this. Below are a few research-backed tips that we’ve found to be helpful:
1.Teach them responsibility. From an early age (as soon as they can walk), ask them to help out with simple tasks such as setting the table for dinner, clearing the table after meal time, taking laundry to appropriate rooms, putting trash in wastebaskets, the list is endless.
A study conducted by Marty Rossman, a professor emeritus at University of Minnesota found that giving set responsiblities to children at an early age will help them be more self-sufficient, maintain positive relationship with family, and achieve success in school and careers.
2. Praise them for their effort not for their talent, this way, they’ll have good work ethic.
More so, it helps boost their self -confidence.
You should praise your child for the time and concentration he put into doing his difficult sum than praising him for getting the right answers.
Studies have found that when children are praised for getting the right answer or being smart, they do not want to lose the status and are more likely to chose easier problems in future while children who are praised for the time they put in getting right answers are more likely to continue seeking challenges.
3. When seeking to encourage your children to be compassionate beings, you should express disappointment rather than anger when they do not do what’s expected of them. When parents learn to not shame or yell at a child when he misbehave but instead express disappointment, it will help them become kind to others.
Do not go all out to punish them when they do something bad rather talk to the child about what he did, why it was wrong, and what he’ll do to resolve it.
4. Endeavour to spend quality time with your children. Make sure the time spent with your children is positive and engaging, instead of simply watching TV together, why not read stories , cook together, or play outside.
Even if the time spent with your children is brief, it’s the substance that counts.
